‘Magazine Dreams’ Fails To Flex, ‘October 8’ A Standout With ‘Secret Mall Apartment’ – Specialty Box Office

'Magazine Dreams' fails to flex at its indie film box office debut but two documentaries, 'October 8' and 'Secret Mall Apartment', stand out.

Magazine Dreams starring Jonathan Majors is eyeing an estimated $700k weekend in 815 theaters, solid in NY, LA and a handful of urban markets but below the $1 million Deadline hears the distributor had initially been hoping for given strong engagement online with the film, which has a 91% verified audience score on Rotten Tomatoes (81% with critics). A surprise standout this weekend, Secret Mall Apartment directed by Jeremy Workman and self-released by Wheelhouse Creative, posted one of the highest per screen openings for a documentary over the past six years with an anticipated $40.5k at one exclusive engagement in Providence, RI where shows were added to keep up with demand. Starring Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizamo, the double Jury and Audience Award winner from last year’s South by SXSW expands next week to 75 screens in major markets, going wider on April 4.
