'King Charles said he forgave me for what I did – but Queen Camilla had other ideas'
Derek Thompson denied King Charles III of a win as an amateur jockey back in 1980, but the two have reportedly ironed out their differences as a result of their rivalry in the years since
King Charles, who had a brief stint as an amateur jockey some 45 years ago, participated in six races, including an appearance at the Cheltenham Festival shortly before his engagement to Princess Diana. Thompson, a much-loved figure in the racing world, competed against the then-Prince on that day, riding to victory over Charles' mount, the favoured Long Wharf. Thompson looks back on the race fondly, confessing that even before the start, he felt confident in his horse, trained by the later-to-be six-time champion National Hunt trainer Nicky Henderson, standing a strong chance to win, reports Aberdeen Live.
