Todd Phillips’ offbeat comic book musical, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the eponymous supervillain, alongside Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn, flopped at the box office. In his review, Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman writes that “the concept is audacious but the execution less so in a movie that takes a step back from the danger of ‘Joker. The film sees Phoenix reprise his Oscar-winning role as Arthur Fleck (who later becomes Batman’s notorious foe) and conspire with Gaga ‘s equally twisted Harley.
