'Healthy and happy' baby's devastating diagnosis after he suddenly stopped moving

Amy Lewis was left devastated after her son, Niko, now one, was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type one, when he suddenly stopped moving

This condition causes limited movement, inability to sit unsupported, and difficulties with breathing, feeding and swallowing due to low levels of the survival motor neuron protein (SMN). Despite undergoing successful gene therapy, Niko has faced severe health issues, including contracting respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in March 2024, which required life support, and a scoliosis diagnosis in May 2024. Niko also has scoliosis (Image: PA Real Life)Amy's mission now is to raise enough funds to purchase additional essential equipment for her brave son, specifically a custom-made £3,000 back brace.
