‘Gladiator II’s Joseph Quinn Talks “Reverence” For Joaquin Phoenix’s Performance In OG
Nearly 25 years later, Joseph Quinn didn't want to look to the original 'Gladiator' for inspiration in playing his villainous character in the sequel.
The Gladiator II star recently opened up about the “reverence” he has for Joaquin Phoenix ‘s performance as Commodus in the original movie as he revealed some inspirations for his portrayal of Roman emperor Geta. Instead, Quinn turned to Philip Seymour Hoffman’s performance in Mission: Impossible III, as well as Gary Oldman in The Fifth Element, whom he said “has this relish for being horrible.” Gladiator II stars Paul Mescal as Lucius, who previously witnessed Maximus (portrayed in the original by Russell Crowe) die at the hands of his uncle Commodus (Phoenix) in the first movie.
