‘Full Metal Jacket’ star Matthew Modine criticizes Donald Trump for using film as “tool of propaganda”

'Full Metal Jacket' star Matthew Modine had harsh words for Donald Trump using clips of Stanley Kubrick's war film in a campaign ad, comparing the former president to Adolf Hitler.

"In the 1930s, Leni Riefenstahl directed the Nazi propaganda films Triumph of the Will and Olympia," Modine tells Entertainment Weekly in an emailed statement when asked for comment on the Trump ad. Modine continues, "ironically, Trump has twisted and profoundly distorted Kubrick's powerful anti-war film into a perverse, homophobic, and manipulative tool of propaganda." Full Metal Jacket makes clear that Hartman's authoritarianism is not particularly effective (he himself meets a violent end, and many of his Marines-in-training go on to be killed by the Viet Cong) in addition to being cruel and inhuman.
