‘Elio’ Misfire Could Hasten Demise Of Original Animation, Wall Street Analyst Says, But “Don’t Blame Film Execs, Blame The Audience”

The poor start for Disney/Pixar's 'Elio' at the box office could lead movie studios to shun original animated films, one Wall Street analyst believes.

Despite a Rotten Tomatoes score of 84%, which placed it in the top 30% of all reviewed films annually, the Disney-Pixar release wound up a poster child for the times, as Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro has analyzed. Individual film performance seldom affects stock prices anymore, though the chilling implications of a malfunction in the theme-park assembly line is certainly enough to give the market pause. The analyst noted that even that stark comparison involves a major asterix – he included Super Mario Bros. as an original even though its $1.36 billion haul was driven by it being based on a long-popular video game.
