‘Black Bag’ Review: Michael Fassbender And Cate Blanchett Are Spies In Love In Steven Soderbergh’s Stylish Thriller

A review of 'Black Bag' which stars Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett as married spies caught up in a mystery when a mole must be uncovered

With an A+ cast at the top of their game, a tight 93 minute running time, and dialogue with wit and bite, this finds the director with one of his best opportunities to do what he does so well and give that older audience a reason to go back to the movies. It gets instantly complex when one of them happens to be his wife Kathryn St. Jean ( Cate Blanchett) with whom he shares a truly healthy and passionate married life, but now must wonder if there are even greater, world beating secrets she is keeping from him. The fun of it all becomes also a sort of Agatha Christie-style cat and mouse game as George zeroes in individually on his suspects, and becomes especially alarmed by a movie ticket tossed in the trash that leads to suspicions Kathryn is keeping things from him.
