‘Anora’ Director Sean Baker on Why He Chose Brit Boy Band Take That to Soundtrack the Opening Strip Club Scene: ‘It Was Like Serendipity’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Sean Baker explains the 'OMG' moment when he first used 'Greatest Day' by Take That to soundtrack the opening strip club scene in 'Anora.'

The song chosen to soundtrack this sequence is “Greatest Day,” the uplifting pop anthem by U.K. boy band and 1990s favorites Take That(but released in 2008 after the group had reformed without Robbie Williams). After the world premiere of “Anora” in Cannes, many film critics and writers — most of them Brits — took to social media to express their surprise and delight at the choice. Baker admitted that, while he knew Take That, it was from their earlier, pre-breakup period via tracks such as 1995’s smash hit “Back for Good.” Their later work, including “Greatest Day,” had passed him by, as it did many outside of the U.K.
