When Ken Kraven, the Hollywood manager, got it in his head to put together a mega recording session featuring the nation’s biggest pop stars for a common cause, he had little reason to believe he could pull it off. The organizers had barely a month to get their vision in place, but by the time the opening credits of Ngyuen’s documentary are finished, we’ve seen the faces of Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Bette Midler, Paul Simon and Diana Ross. Perhaps that is because the drama occurred offscreen: notable absences were Madonna, who wasn’t invited (the producers picked Lauper over the Material Girl), and Prince, who’d issued a condition that he record a solo in a room by himself – which was denied.
