The series finale began one hour before the asteroid was set to touch down in Austin as a professor at Travis State University revealed that the college had its own nuclear reactor. When the scientist learned about the impending natural disaster, he was on the other side of campus and ended up running all the way back to the science lab to try and hit the “scram button” and shut off the nuclear reactor. Once the 9-1-1 call center was back in action, Owen Strand ( Rob Lowe) and his team headed to the university and discovered that the asteroid hit the nuclear reactor building and was overheating.
