22 Horror-Movie Remakes That You Should Actually Watch
Hollywood took a second stab (pun intended) at these scary flicks, and we’re glad it did.
That part is no surprise, considering Cronenberg is the undisputed king of gruesome screen transformations (see: Videodrome, Scanners, Naked Lunch, The Brood, and so on), but the emotional weight that Goldblum and his co-star Geena Davis bring to the relationship between Seth Brundle and Veronica Quaife sets the physical horror up to be so very devastating in the end. The 2017 Suspiria is a three-hour odyssey into tightly woven female relationships that create an insular hive of dancers and witches living against the backdrop of political unrest in ’70s Berlin — and everyone is in earth tones this time around!Dakota Johnson plays a mystically inclined Suzy Bannion, and she’s sparring with earthbound extraterrestrial Tilda Swinton as the Tanz Akademie’s top instructor, Madame Blanc. Vulture’s Alison Willmore, however, came around to see its adjustments as assets instead of liabilities: “I didn’t mind that, ultimately, because while the remake loses something in ditching the original’s unrelenting drive toward darkness, it also avoids what it leaves unsaid, which is a borderline reactionary message about needing to overcome compliant liberalism to step up to protect oneself and one’s family.”
