1-2 Special has acquired all North American rights for Simón Mesa Soto ’s dark comedy “A Poet,” which premiered in Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the jury prize. However, after meeting a young student, Yurlady, a teenage girl from humble roots, he seizes on the opportunity to help cultivate an emerging talent, only to discover that dragging her into the world of poets may not be the way. In its review, Variety called the film “a hilariously absurdist fable” that’s “both funny and poignant… resulting in a truly unique cinematic experience that levels up Soto.”
