10 Things I Hate About You director recalls how an unknown Heath Ledger beat out 253 other actors for the role
'10 Things I Hate About You' director Gil Junger is looking back on how Heath Ledger beat out 253 other contenders for the role of Patrick Verona: 'He just had a magnetism unlike I've ever felt.'
As Gil Junger, the director of the beloved 1999 teen rom-com, works to get a trilogy of follow-up films off the ground, he recalls to Entertainment Weekly how and why he cast a then-unknown Ledger as brooding high school bad boy Patrick Verona. 10 Things I Hate About You marked a breakout role for Ledger, who made a big impression on audiences as a romantic lead who recites poetry, engages in paintball warfare, and even serenades Kat in one of the film's most memorable scenes. While he intends to maintain the "same blend of heart and humor" as the original movie, Junger says he avoided pursuing a direct sequel out of respect for Ledger's memory.
