Hot Ones’s Sean Evans lacks the scene-stealing impulse of other celebrity-interview hosts. That may be the key to his success.
It’s a rainy evening in early March, and Kevin Hart, there to promote live tour dates and his animated show Lil Kev, enters the studio to partake in a peculiar if now familiar procession: munching through ten chicken wings draped in increasingly hot sauces while answering Evans’s ornate questions. He says he’s searching for what he calls the “Charlize Theron Shoulder Shrug,” so named for the 2018 episode with the actress who he says visibly relaxed after he landed a particularly elaborate question: “You initially had trouble finding a buyer for Monster, a film for which you won an Academy Award that almost went directly to video. “Seeing him grow more famous, those tendencies have only come out more.” Evans’s largest brush with the celebrity-industrial complex to date happened early last year, after his now-ex-girlfriend, adult actress Melissa Stratton, hard-launched their relationship on social media on Valentine’s Day.
