Top-flight footballer dead at 43 after signing up for war

Former Russia international Aleksei Bugayev has been killed while fighting in the war in Ukraine after joining President Vladimir Putin's forces following a drugs conviction

According to reports from Russia, Bugayev's agent, Anton Smirnov, revealed that retrieving his body for burial was "impossible" due to the intense conflict in the area where he lost his life. This comes amid Russia's nearly three-year-long battle with Ukraine, which has seen Russian President Putin increasingly seeking to bolster his troop numbers in the face of mounting frontline losses, reports the Mirror. The conflict is believed to have claimed the lives of almost 200,000 Russian soldiers, prompting Putin to recently sign a bill permitting convicts to join the fight - with some even being allowed to enlist before their trials have concluded.
