Patti LuPone says Audra McDonald is “not a friend.” Since when?
McDonald currently stars as Momma Rose in Gypsy and is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, an award which LuPone herself won for her portrayal of theater’s most vicious stage mother in 2008. LuPone has been a vocal proponent of Nicole Scherzinger’s nominated performance in Sunset all season and with Tony voting closing on June 6, this vexation has dramatic timing. Broadway.com editor Paul Wontorek posted a photo of himself alongside Lewis and McDonald on Instagram, captioned “Spotlight On: Fabulous veteran Tony winners on Broadway.” McDonald’s Gypsy co-star Joy Woods shared the post, while Broadway stars including Donna Murphy (also a member of the “Ladies in Red” sextet), Bonnie Milligan, Jasmine Amy Rogers, and Lewis’s Hell’s Kitchen co-stars Maleah Joi Moon and Shoshanna Bean have all commented in support.
