Oscar-Nominated Screenwriter Arrested In Iran After Criticizing Supreme Leader Over Crackdown On Protests


Mehdi Mahmoudian, the Oscar-nominated co-writer of "It Was Just an Accident," was detained by Iranian authorities in Tehran over the weekend, days after signing a letter critical of the government's crackdown on protesters in the country. The letter signed by 17 artists, lawyers and activists, including Mahmoudian and others who were taken into custody Saturday, assigned responsibility to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for the arrests and killings of demonstrators, according to The New York Times.
