Matt Tyrnauer On His Latest Doc ‘Nobu’: ‘You Could Call It Soft Core Food Porn’
Matt Tyrnauer talks about his documentary 'Nobu,' chronicling the life and success of Nobu Matsuhisa.
In the film, Tyrnauer (“Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid,” “Where’s My Roy Cohn?”) covers Matsuhisa’s early life in Japan, his fledgling business in Peru, and eventually, his success in Los Angeles and New York City. Featuring interviews with Matsuhisa, Wolfgang Puck, and Nobu co-owners Robert De Niro, producer Meir Teper, and restaurateur Drew Nieporent, the doc is a behind-the-scenes look at the man who opened a little Japanese restaurant on La Cienega Blvd in 1987 that attracted the likes of Tom Cruise, Madonna and Mike Ovitz and how he eventually turned the venture into a multi-million dollar worldwide brand. I’ve never made a movie about food, or restaurants, and Los Angeles is always on my mind as a subject, so when I read Nobu’s autobiography, it occurred to me that he would be a great topic to combine a lot of interests of mine.
