Lidl making big change to self-service checkouts to battle surge in problem shoplifting
Lidl is introducing new cameras to its self-service checkouts, but shoppers need not worry as they're not the same as those used in Sainsbury's and other supermarkets
If you miss scanning something, the tech will clock it and replay the moment on the checkout screen – cue a staff member popping over to sort it out before you can pay up. Since introducing self-checkouts in 2017 to make shopping more convenient and efficient for customers, Lidl has incorporated an eye-level screen that plays a reminder message for shoppers to ensure all items have been scanned. Similarly, Tesco recently adopted VAR-style replays at its self-checkouts, a tactic rivals have successfully employed to reduce blatant acts of theft.
