These 855 women (two of whom are still alive) endured incredible levels of racism and sexism while undertaking what was considered an impossible mission—clearing the backlog of undelivered mail to raise the spirits of the troops. Their story, hidden away for so many years, was brought back to life in a film directed by Tyler Perry, with Washington being one of the lead actors.
