Inside the Tony Awards: 5 Things You Didn’t See on TV

Here's what you didn't see on TV at the 2025 Tonys.

That’s to say nothing of the stormy skies (guests had to dodge the rain drops while entering the theater) and early call time (a preshow starts at 6:40 p.m. before the televised portion begins at 8 p.m. — turning the evening into a nearly five-hour endurance act).OK, maybe those asks aren’t that big of an ordeal. Here’s what you didn’t see on TV at the 2025 Tonys, where “Maybe Happy Ending” was the most decorated show, “Sunset Boulevard” star Nicole Scherzinger triumphed in the night’s most fiercely contested race, Escola made history as the first gender non-binary person to win for best actor in a play, and host Cynthia Erivo wasn’t afraid to sing off long-winded winners. Not to be outdone, Audra McDonald, the most decorated Tony actor in history, had the crowd erupting into cheers before she even opened her mouth to sing “Rose’s Turn” from “Gypsy.” And of course, the entire room leapt to their feet as she belted her final, rafter-shaking note.
