How the Documentary ‘Call to Serve’ Spotlights Veterans Working in Disaster Relief: ‘If You Help Other People, You Heal Yourself Along the Way’

Ford Philanthrophy's partnership with Team Rubicon, a veterans org focused on disaster relief, is captured in the short documentary 'Call to Serve.'

As Hurricane Helene made landfall in the Southeast U.S. last fall, filmmakers Phil Hessler and Cole Sax were tracking a group of veterans — the Team Rubicon “Greyshirts” — who deploy into disaster zones to help however is needed. The company initially supported the nonprofit by providing access to its 9,000 dealerships globally and its fleet of vehicles, but recently instituted volunteer opportunities for Ford employees to deploy alongside the Greyshirts on their missions to help communities impacted by natural disasters. What if we convened all these people together and thought about a broader partnership to have a bigger impact in communities?’” says Ford Philanthropy president Mary Culler, speaking from the company’s home base of Detroit, where nearly 800 employees gathered to volunteer with the four organizations at once.
