Giveon Brings the Sound of ‘70s R&B Back to the Future With ‘Beloved’
Anyone seeking a return to the sumptuous soul of the early '70s will find it on Giveon's new album 'Beloved,' which brings the sound into the present.
But it’s rare to find a project that re-creates the sound of a certain genre or era with painstaking accuracy but brings it into the present, and that’s exactly what “Beloved,” R&B singer Giveon ’s second full-length album, has accomplished. It channels the lush, orchestrated R&B of early 1970s Philadelphia (Teddy Pendergrass, the Delfonics, TSOP) as well as Al Green, Isaac Hayes and Marvin Gaye without ever poking fun at it — the swooning strings, easy grooves and air of heartfelt seduction. He also credits the Grammy Museum’s education programs — which also boast Billie Eilish and her brother/collaborator Finneas as well as Maren Morris and Olivia Rodrigo as alums — with introducing him to some of the artists who influenced him most.
