Country Music at a Crossroads
What does country even sound like when its boundaries and reach keep expanding?
Beyoncé, Morgan Wallen, Shaboozey all have claim to the genre at the moment, artists with diverse perspectives tugging at the core of what a decade ago was a much more homogenized sound. His song “I’m the Problem” opens with beautiful bluegrass guitar before hitting you with heavy 808 basslines, creating a sonic reflection of country’s current identity crisis. No current song exemplifies this connection better than the cumbia-corrido hybrid “Me Jalo” from Fuerza Regida and Grupo Frontera, two U.S.-based acts performing Mexican regional music.
