‘West Virginia’s First Daughter’ Mary Lou Retton Arrested for DUI
The self-proclaimed face of West Virginia and former Olympian could not pass the officers’ sobriety tests — including balance.
Former gymnast Mary Lou Retton was arrested for driving under the influence in West Virginia and claimed to arresting officers that “I’m West Virginia’s First Daughter.” Police were notified on May 17 of a Porsche with Texas plates driving “all over the roadway” and found Retton in the parking lot of an AutoZone, accompanied by a screw-top bottle of wine in the passenger seat, per documents reviewed by WDTV. In the bodycam footage, released by Entertainment Tonight on July 8, Retton can be seen failing multiple sobriety tests, including walking along a thin line. She appeared on Dancing With the Stars in 2018, where she placed ninth, and in 2016, she lobbied senator Dianne Feinstein not to sponsor the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act in the wake of Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse, telling the senator that gymnastics “was a happy, safe place,” per the Toronto Sun.
