‘The Ice Tower’ Takes Top Prize at Neuchatel Fantastic Festival

Lucile Hadzihalilovic’s fractured fairy-tale “The Ice Tower” took top honors at this year’s Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival.

This year’s international jury – made up of graphic novelist Emil Ferris, philosopher Hélène Frappat, author Jean-Baptiste Del Amo, filmmaker John Hsu, and fashion designer Olivier Theyskens – also gave a special mention to Julia Kowalski’s “Her Will Be Done,” which Variety critic Jessica Kiang praised for its “intriguing mix of heady and earthy, in which folk-horror eeriness fuses with provincial narrow-mindedness, and mysticism oozes through the muck.” Pavlo Ostrikov’s space-bound love story “U Are the Universe” was another clear favorite, winning both the audience prize and the youth tribute, awarded by local high-school students. Meanwhile, this year’s international critics jury – of which Variety took part – shone the spotlight on “Honey Bunch,” an off-kilter relationship drama full of 1970s style and wild plot swings.
