‘The Boys’ and ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Writers Imagined a Fascism That’s Now Coming True: ‘I Never Imagined That Would Happen In Our Own Country’
'The Boys' and 'The Handmaid's Tale' writers imagined a kind of fascism that is now coming true in the real world.
As part of its Emmy for Your Consideration campaign for “ The Boys,” Sony Pictures TV and Prime Video are embracing the show’s topicality. “When we opened the first writers’ room in early 2016, that was before the election, and we had a woman running for president,” recalls “Handmaid’s Tale” executive producer Eric Tuchman, who serves as co-showrunner with Yahlin Chang. What’s scary, she adds, is that the writers have simply been imagining and then writing what they thinkwould be the worst-case scenarios for what it’s like inside Gilead — buffeted by research into history.
