“ Smurfs ” director Chris Miller wanted “to honor the DNA of the original comics, the Peyo designs — that was vitally important to me,” he says about the animated feature, set for a July 18 release by Paramount. Pam Brady, whose credits include “South Park,” “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken,” “#1 Happy Family USA” and “Lady Dynamite,” wrote the screenplay. It felt completely natural to reimagine the Smurfs for today’s audience with Rihanna as Smurfette because her genuine love for the franchise made her the perfect fit,” says Naito.
