‘Fucktoys’ Review: Annapurna Sriram’s Saucy and Singular Sex Comedy Tests the Limits of Good Taste
The fearless filmmaker-star erupts onto the scene as a sex worker trying to combat a curse, conjuring a world of mayhem that feels both fresh and odd.
Making her debut as writer, director and star, force-of-nature Annapurna Sriram manages to succeed in delivering a singular vision in all aspects of filmmaking, though not without its influences. With its sexually frank dialogue and situations, satire of celebrity and media and drug cultures, the good-taste-defying project is guaranteed to offend large swaths of the public, though many will find enough to enjoy here to make it a cult phenomenon. The film’s superstitious heroine, AP (Sriram), is having her fortune told by a psychic in flowing robes and a matching huge headpiece (a delicious cameo from Big Freedia), who diagnoses the curse and the $1,000 solution to reverse it.
