The Ballad of Wallis Island only had a limited release in theaters earlier this year, but it’s the kind of movie that’s a welcome respite from blockbuster films and a reminder that not every story has to have impossible stakes. Considering that Herb McGwyer ( Tom Basden) and his ex-partner/former lover, Nell Mortimer ( Carey Mulligan), barely speak anymore, getting them to play together is a tall order even for Charles. The comedy/drama Force Majeure puts Tomas ( Johannes Bah Kuhnke) in that position when it looks like his wife, Ebba ( Lisa Loven Kongsli), and their children are about to be overtaken by an avalanche.
